The one-time awards of $2500 each are provided through the Brown University Fund for the Education of the Children of Providence. The awards, based on merit and financial need with a preference for students who would be the first in their families to attend college, were available to those students accepted to accredited two- or four-year institutions of higher education.
President Paxson introduced the students, the inaugural group of Brown University Providence Scholars, to the crowd of more than 200 in attendance at the conference.
The students receiving these scholarships have a range of distinct stories that share a common theme: they are all inspiring," said Paxson. These impressive individuals have applied themselves, sometimes under difficult circumstances, to achieve success in the classroom and in their lives. They are role models for their peers and for all of us, offering powerful testimonials about the enduring value of education."
Mayor Taveras applauded the Scholars and commended Paxson and Brown for their support of Providence and its schools.
I congratulate every recipient of these Brown University Fund for the Education of the Children of Providence scholarships, high school graduates in our city who are eager to attend college and continue their academic careers, said Mayor Taveras. This scholarship program is another example of the citys strong partnership with Brown and the universitys commitment to our community.
We are thrilled for these students, said Superintendent Lusi. They have demonstrated commitment to excellence, and Brown's scholarships are helping to make the pathway to college possible for our students.
