  • Mayor Taveras, Commissioner Gist honor Providence schools

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist presented awards to five Providence schools and one Providence-based charter public school today (June 12, 2013), in recognition of their increased participation in the SurveyWorks program.

The R.I. Department of Education (RIDE) surveys students, parents, teachers, and staff members annually through the SurveyWorks program. This year, RIDE is recognizing schools that met or exceeded their participation-rate goals on the student survey or dramatically improved the participation rate on the parent survey.

Students, classroom educators, and parents offer valuable insights and information about strides we are making to improve public education in Rhode Island and what can be improved upon to better educate our children, said Mayor Angel Taveras. Today we recognize six Providence schools for their successful efforts to increase student participation and parent engagement in the SurveyWorks program.

To help us make our schools great places for teaching and learning, its important that we listen to the voices of students, parents, teachers, and staff members, said Deborah A. Gist, Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education. We use the information we get from SurveyWorks to help us plan how to make every school a place where teachers enjoy teaching and students enjoy learning. I am grateful that these schools in Providence have worked hard to improve the SurveyWorks participation rates.

We as a district are focusing on making decisions based on data, said Superintendent Dr. Susan Lusi. I commend these schools for the time and effort that they put into improving the results we get from the SurveyWorks tool. More and better data helps us to make the best decisions for our students.

The Providence and Providence-based schools honored today are:

For meeting or exceeding goals on all three surveys:
    Charlotte Woods Elementary School

    Nathan Bishop Middle School
