"There are many benefits to having our police officers on bicycles; however, the most important ones are visibility and mobility," said Colonel Mendonca. "The visibility of an officer on a bicycle cannot be matched. With this visibility also comes an increase in human contact with the community. In fact, it is much like the old "Beat Officers" who used to walk the streets where officers know more people by name and have a good feel for the neighborhoods at a personal level. This allows officers to be proactive in fighting crime rather than reactive."
"Our new bike patrol will only serve to strengthen the relationships between the hard-working men and women of our police department and the community," said Mayor Diossa. "On a bicycle, an officer is much more approachable than in a car and will no doubt help in building new contacts and trust from our citizens."
