This free 15-week program will help prepare unemployed and underemployed Rhode Islanders with the skills they need to obtain entry-level positions in the healthcare industry. The program will run 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, from Sept. 5-Dec. 20, 2013.
During nine weeks of classroom training, participants will be prepared through training in computers, medical terminology, HIPAA, core job skills, job search methods, resume writing, and interviewing skills. The class also offers certifications in CPR, first aid, bloodborne pathogens, and customer service.
The classroom component is followed by a valuable 5-week internship experience and individualized assistance with job placement, education and career advancement. Graduates are also eligible to take free college classes hosted by Stepping Up in conjunction with the Community College of Rhode Island.
During the past five years, Stepping Up has hosted Healthcare Career Orientation classes in Providence, Woonsocket, and Westerly, RI, through partnerships with community-based organizations. Stepping Up and the Newport Skills Alliance will replicate this successful program model in Newport.
