  • Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island to Hold

PROVIDENCE, RI (September 10, 2013) To help individuals better determine if they are leading a healthy lifestyle, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) is offering a free body mass index (BMI) screening during September. The event will take place on Tuesday, September 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Crossroads Rhode Island, 160 Broad Street, Providence.

A representative from United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode Island will also be present to help connect individuals with the information and services they need, confidentially and for free. Whether you need to find daycare for your child, financial assistance, a mental health counselor, or if you need any other kind of community-based service in Rhode Island, 2-1-1 is available to help you and your family.

BMI is used as a screening tool to identify possible weight problems for adults. However, BMI is not a diagnostic tool. For example, a person may have a high BMI. However, to determine if excess weight is a health risk, a healthcare provider would need to perform further assessments. These assessments might include skinfold thickness measurements, evaluations of diet, physical activity, family history, and other appropriate health screenings.
