This is exactly the type of innovative program we need right now to fuel our economy and get Providence residents back to work, said Mayor Cicilline. These jobs will not only help parents support their families during these incredibly difficult economic times, this investment will also go a long way towards helping to jump start the local economy by providing real help to small businesses.
Jobs Now Providence grew out of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Emergency Contingency Fund which was created through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. Working in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Human Services, Jobs Now Providence will use approximately $10 million in federal funds to significantly expand employment opportunities by subsidizing 100% of the wages paid to unemployed or underemployed workers who meet certain criteria.
Jobs Now Providence runs until September 2010 and consistent with the goals of the federal stimulus package to provide an immediate source of income for low-income families and to stimulate the economy. Participants will be in a stronger position to either retain their jobs after the program ends, or to obtain new employment as the economy begins to improve.
The jobs program is being used successfully by several cities across the country including Los Angeles and San Francisco. For more information on the employment criteria for Jobs Now Providence, contact Network Rhode Island 462-8908 at visit the Citys website at providenceri.com.
