If you are headed for a day on the beach, be sure you pack your beach bag with a hat, sunglasses, an umbrella, and a bottle of waterproof sunscreen. However, the beach isnt the only place to be aware of the sun. Running, hiking, biking, participating in an outdoor yoga or boot camp class, even going to a concert could put you at risk of overexposure.
Sun overexposure can cause many issues to your health. Sun poisoning, melanoma, dehydration, and heat stroke are just a few of the many potential risks of getting too much sun.
There are many smart ways to enjoy the warm weather of summer without harming your health. To stay protected from the sun, here are some tips to keep in mind:
" Make sure you have the proper SPF. Use a sunscreen stick to protect the top of your head and face or wear a hat while running. Quick fact: SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and indicates how long you can generally stay in the sun without getting a burn. Apply a generous amount of UVA/UVB sunscreen (2 tablespoons) to your body 30 minutes before going outside. If you are sweating or swimming, remember to reapply frequently.
" Concrete, sand, and water reflect 85 percent to 90 percent of the suns UV rays, so whether you are swimming, collecting shells, or exercising outdoors, try your best to cover up!
" Take breaks from direct sun. Find a nice shady area to relax if youd like to spend long periods of time outside, or lie under an umbrella.
" Exercise in the early morning, late afternoon or early evening to avoid scorching temperatures during peak hours of sunshine.
" Stay hydrated! Avoid sugary drinks that can have reverse effects on your hydration. Post workout, try a healthy fruit smoothie made with replenishing coconut water.
