On May 20th the 29th Annual Metcalf
Awards Ceremony for Diversity in the Media was held at the Biltmore Hotel. The
program hosted by Rhode Island for Community & Justice (RICJ) and organized
by Dr. Toby Ayers was well attended by winners and friends and families of
winners. Josie White, President of RICJ gave the welcome with Alisha Pina, RI
Department of Human Services performing the duties of Emcee.
G. Wayne Miller, The Providence Journal received the Print
Daily Award, Casey Nilsson, Rhode Island Monthly received the Print Monthly
Award, Elisabeth Harrison, John Bender and Chuck Hinman, Rhode Island Public
Radio received the Advocacy Award, Jim Vincent, Jim Vincent Show, received the
Broadcast TV Award, RIPR Newsroom, Rhode Island Public Radio, received the
Broadcast Radio Award, and Vanessa Toledo –Vickers, Latino Public Radio &
Academy for Career Exploration, received the Community Award.
The event included a light Breakfast and an opportunity for
attendees to network and share ideas in the world of media. An independent
panel of former journalists, journalism faculty, communications specialist and
community selected the winners. All of the winners were chosen in light of
their stories of Rhode Island diversity.
