My name is Lauren Mueller and I’m a PR Specialist with Be The Match, the National Marrow
Donor Program. If you’re not familiar, Be The Match
operates the largest and most diverse bone marrow registry in the world. Every
3 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and for patients with
diseases like leukemia – and other blood disorders, a cure exists through a
bone marrow transplant.
I’m reaching out about a searching patient in the Central Falls
area who is in need of a life-saving blood stem cell donor as soon as possible.
Jodeci De Jesus is a 26 year old who has been managing sickle cell
disease since he was born. Growing up, he averaged 4 hospital stays a year
dealing with intense pain related to his sickle cell. In May of this year,
Jodeci experienced his first sickle cell related stroke which left him with
some side effects that left it more difficult for him to walk. In order to get
back to a normal life, Jodeci needs to find an unrelated donor on the Be The
Match Registry – currently there is not a single match identified for him. One
other twist to this story is that Jodeci’s oldest son also has sickle cell
disease, and while his symptoms are currently manageable, his son could also be
in need one day in the future.
Since a patient is more likely to match with a donor who shares
a similar ethnic background, it is incredibly important that Jodeci finds a
donor of Hispanic descent in order to receive the best transplant outcome. It’s
essential that we get more diverse individuals to join the registry on his
Would you consider sharing this story with the community in
order to get more people the join the registry? Jodeci and his family would be
totally open to interviews, so let me know if you’re interested in coordinating
something and we can work things out (photos are attached).
