Statement from Governor Lincoln D. Chafee Regarding the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation
Yesterday, Keith Stokes offered his resignation as Executive Director of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC), which I accepted.
I thank Keith for his service to Rhode Island, not only at the helm of the EDC, but also as a former Board member of that agency and as the long-time Executive Director of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce.
Keith is committed to seeing Rhode Island succeed and I am confident that he will continue to be very involved in the state he loves.
The Providence American had an exclusive interview with Keith Stokes, Executive Director, RI Economic Development Corporation regarding the 38 Studios story and his reported resignation.
Telephone Interview at about 9:15AM:
PA: Good morning Keith how are you? Keith we are contacting you regarding reports in the media about your resignation. Is this true? We hope not but if so, what is the reason for your resignation at this time?
Keith Stokes: Good morning Peter. Yes it true. In fact I am giving you this exclusive &that I did tend my resignation effective today& Regardless of what you may hear out there I have been thinking about this for some time. I decided to leave this position in order to spend more time with my family. This has been on my mind for a while.
PA: Keith the general consensus of course is that your resignation is timed to the 38 Studios loan default, is that true?
Keith Stokes: Peter let me say this & I have been thinking about this for some time and the fact really is that we should be focused on the development of the States economy and job development, not about any one person in this case me. We have a lot of work to do in the State and should channel our resources and attention on that bigger issue&
Keith also mentioned &that proprietary rights clauses with 38 Studios and the State precludes him from discussing anything about 38 Studios and or RI EDC, I am sure you understand&
